Movember: Men's Mental Health

ree

Each November, Australians across the country grow moustaches, host events, and start conversations — all for Movember, a movement dedicated to raising awareness about men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

At The Medical Centre of Gympie, we’re proud to support Movember and encourage all men to take charge of their mental and physical wellbeing. It’s not just about growing a moustache — it’s about growing awareness, connection, and the courage to talk about how you really feel.

Why Men’s Mental Health Matters

Mental health affects everyone — but for men, the impact can often be hidden. Research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Movember Foundation shows that:

  • 1 in 8 Australian men will experience depression, and

  • 1 in 5 will experience anxiety during their lifetime.

  • Men make up approximately 75% of suicides in Australia each year.

  • The suicide rate for men is three times higher than for women.

  • Only 30% of men who experience mental health problems seek professional help.

These numbers are a powerful reminder that mental health isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a health issue that deserves attention, understanding, and care.

Early Signs of Mental Health Struggles in Men

Men often show different signs of mental distress than women, which can make it harder to recognise when something is wrong. Some early signs include:

  • Increased anger, irritability, or frustration

  • Withdrawing from family, friends, or social events

  • Loss of interest in work, hobbies, or exercise

  • Using alcohol or drugs to cope

  • Difficulty concentrating, sleeping, or eating

  • Feeling hopeless, overwhelmed, or unusually tired

If these symptoms sound familiar, it’s important to reach out early — support is available and recovery is possible.

How Men’s Mental Health Is Diagnosed

If you’ve been feeling unlike yourself, your GP is the best place to start. Your doctor will talk with you about your symptoms, how long they’ve been present, and how they’re affecting your daily life.

At The Medical Centre of Gympie, our doctors can also help you set up a Mental Health Care Plan, which gives you access to Medicare rebates for psychologist sessions. This means you can get professional support that’s affordable and easy to access.

Treatment and Support Options

Treatment is different for everyone, but common approaches include:

  • Counselling or therapy – Talking with a psychologist can help you manage stress, anxiety, and depression.

  • Medication – If needed, your GP may prescribe antidepressants or other medications to help balance mood.

  • Exercise and lifestyle changes – Staying active, eating well, and improving sleep can have a big impact on mental wellbeing.

  • Support groups and community connections – Sharing experiences helps you realise you’re not alone.

The key message: there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but there is always a way forward.

Who Is More at Risk?

Some men are more likely to develop mental health challenges due to:

  • Work-related stress or long hours

  • Relationship or family issues

  • Chronic illness, injury, or pain

  • Major life changes, such as retirement or loss

  • Isolation or lack of support networks

Even so, mental health conditions can affect any man, regardless of background, age, or lifestyle.

Common Myths About Men’s Mental Health

Myth 1: “Real men don’t talk about their feelings".

Truth: Talking about your feelings takes courage and strength. It helps reduce stress and prevents problems from getting worse.

Myth 2: “If I ignore it, it will go away".

Truth: Mental health issues rarely resolve on their own. The earlier you reach out, the easier it is to manage.

Myth 3: “Therapy is only for people who are really sick".

Truth: Counselling can help anyone — from managing everyday stress to overcoming depression and anxiety.

What You Can Do This Movember

  • Start a conversation – Ask your mates how they’re really doing.

  • Book a check-up – Talk to your GP about your mental and physical health.

  • Move for Movember – Commit to 60 km of exercise for the 60 men lost to suicide every hour worldwide.

  • Look after yourself – Get good sleep, eat healthy meals, and stay active.

  • Reach out for help – Whether it’s your GP, a friend, or a mental health service — talking is the first step.

Final Word

Movember isn’t just about moustaches — it’s about starting conversations that save lives. Men’s mental health deserves the same care and attention as physical health.

If you’ve been feeling low, stressed, or unlike yourself, book an appointment with your GP at The Medical Centre of Gympie. Our team can help you develop a Mental Health Care Plan and connect you with the right support.

Because looking after your mental health is one of the best things you can do for yourself — and for those who care about you. 💙
